Who owns the Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands?

The Christmas edition of the Economist magazine has an interesting piece that suggests that the Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands belong to the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom.
But the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom is none other than the Okinawan Islands that currently belong to Japan.
So the best solution would be to allow Okinawa is reclaim its independence, and take the Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands with them.
One of the many problems of course is that the biggest US base in Japan is located in Okinawa!
